Building a Fitness Center for Hospital Workers

Yale New Haven Hospital wanted a wellness program that would improve employee health and happiness, but realized simply building a gym wouldn’t engage its largely sedentary staff. The hospital engaged Exos to design and deliver a fitness center and complementary wellness programming focused on making members feel welcome, relaxed, and supported rather than intimidated.

Exos implemented design choices (for example, avoiding direct sightlines to weight equipment), targeted programming, outreach events, and behavior-change communications to foster routine participation. The result: an average of 28,470 visits to the fitness center yearly, 92% of members would recommend the facility to a colleague, and 98 behavioral-change programs and outreach events delivered in the five years since opening.
