High Expectations of New Students Met by Exinda

Royal Holloway, University of London—an 10,000‑student institution in Egham—faced severe congestion on its halls-of-residence Internet link as students increasingly used social media, streaming (35% of traffic), and gaming, with peaks after 1am. The existing PacketShaper solution was unable to deliver its rated capacity in practice and required constant manual tuning, leaving the IT team struggling to provide the fast, reliable access students expect.

In September 2012, following a recommendation from Khipu Networks, Royal Holloway deployed a pair of Exinda 8760s. The solution immediately provided advanced traffic shaping, hands-off operation and detailed visibility into usage (including top URLs and streaming consumption), comfortably handling peak loads of around 3,500 concurrent users. The result freed IT resources for other projects, improved student experience, and set the college up to extend Exinda across additional links under a 5–7 year agreement.
