Georgia College Eliminates Bandwidth Strain & Improves User Experience

Georgia College, a public liberal arts university in Milledgeville serving over 6,600 students and 300+ faculty and staff, faced severe network strain as mobile devices and streaming apps like YouTube and Netflix consumed bandwidth. Despite imposing a 10MB per-user cap, the campus routinely hit capacity during peak classroom and evening housing hours, degrading performance for academic and recreational applications.

The college replaced its legacy packet shaper with an Exinda 8062 appliance to gain granular application visibility and control, allowing IT to prioritize critical apps and limit bandwidth-hogging activity (e.g., BitTorrent, iOS updates). As a result, the 10MB cap was removed, average utilization sits at 75% of available resources, user complaints have fallen, application performance has improved, and Georgia College avoided an expensive bandwidth upgrade.
