City of Richmond Controls P2P Traffic, Optimizes User Experience for Employees

The City of Richmond, Calif., supports about 850 employees across 35 sites with a mix of fiber, T1, DSL and wireless links, leaving many remote locations with very limited bandwidth. Routine tasks like opening documents, sending email and browsing were slow, and peer-to-peer and media use at a single site could cripple connectivity; IT was also concerned a planned VoIP rollout would further strain the network.

Working with SSP Data, the city deployed Exinda WAN optimization and Internet control appliances (Exinda 6000 and 8000 series) with edge caching at the core and devices at nine remote sites. Policy-based prioritization accelerated file transfers and guaranteed VoIP traffic while blocking P2P and recreational use, resulting in faster day-to-day performance, improved VoIP quality and no more user complaints about network slowness.
