Westmoreland County Reduces Backup and Restore Times, Reduces Reliance on Tape with ExaGrid

Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, a county government serving about 370,000 residents, was struggling with long, unreliable tape backups that demanded daily tape management and frequent troubleshooting. Tape-based restores were slow and time-consuming, consuming valuable IT staff hours and threatening the county’s ability to meet backup windows.

The county deployed an ExaGrid disk-based backup appliance with post-process, byte-level de-duplication that works with its existing Symantec Backup Exec and tape library. The solution let the county run multiple concurrent jobs, cut weekend backup time from 40 to 26 hours and nightly incrementals from eight to four hours, and reduce restores from hours to minutes—lowering tape reliance, saving staff time, and providing a cost-effective, easy-to-manage platform with strong vendor support.
