Vermont Electric Power Company Plugs in ExaGrid, Improves Backups and Restores

Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO), Vermont’s statewide transmission-only utility, was struggling with backups of 56 TB and nearly eight years of tape retention. Long backup windows, unreliable restores and an unwieldy tape archive made disaster recovery slow and risky, prompting the IT team to evaluate disk-based alternatives.

VELCO selected ExaGrid’s post-process deduplication appliance, deploying four systems on-premises with nightly replication to two offsite units and integrating with Symantec Backup Exec. The change greatly reduced reliance on tape, improved restore reliability and disaster recovery, delivered strong deduplication (e.g., 15:1 on Oracle), allowed backing up three times more data including 130 virtual images in roughly the same 12-hour window, and proved easy to scale and support.
