A ExaGrid Case Study
Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) was facing significant challenges with its backup and recovery processes. The company, which manages Vermont's transmission grid, was relying on tape storage for its 56TB of data and nearly eight years of retention. This led to unreliable restores, long backup times, and a cumbersome tape management system. To address this, VELCO sought a disk-based solution and chose to implement a tiered backup storage system from ExaGrid.
ExaGrid provided VELCO with a scalable system of four appliances that integrated seamlessly with their existing Veritas Backup Exec software. The solution utilized ExaGrid's post-process data deduplication, which dramatically reduced storage costs and footprint—achieving a 15:1 deduplication ratio on Oracle data. This allowed VELCO to back up over three times more data, including 130 virtual images, while improving the reliability and speed of restores. ExaGrid also enabled secure offsite replication for disaster recovery, eliminating the company's reliance on tape and ensuring data integrity.
