A ExaGrid Case Study
The Town of Goffstown, NH (population ~18,000) was struggling with slow, unreliable tape backups using Symantec Backup Exec—full backups took 8–10 hours, restores could be hours and failed tapes were common—while staff spent excessive time managing tapes and offsite rotations. These issues infringed on users’ access and made meeting backup and restore goals increasingly difficult.
Goffstown replaced tape with an ExaGrid disk-based backup appliance that works with Backup Exec and uses post-process, byte-level deduplication (about 7:1 for the town). The result: nightly backup windows shrank to 30–60 minutes, restores that once took hours now complete in minutes, storage needs dropped dramatically, WAN replication moved only changes, and the town gained easier management, scalability and responsive vendor support at lower cost.
