The Coastal Bank Credits Receipt of Highest Possible FDIC Regulatory Rating of “1” in Part to Disk-Based Backup System

The Coastal Bank, a 56-year-old community bank based in Savannah, Georgia with six branches, faced growing data volumes and an unwieldy mix of tape and virtual NAS backups that required extensive manual intervention and media swaps. Seeking an automated, low-disruption solution that would work with their existing Symantec Backup Exec and improve protection and efficiency, the bank evaluated alternatives to modernize its backup approach.

The bank deployed ExaGrid’s disk-based, post-process deduplication system behind Backup Exec, eliminating tape chores and preserving existing workflows. Results included a 25% reduction in backup time, critical restores completed in minutes (one recovery took five minutes), a 65:1 deduplication ratio, roughly 1–1.5 hours per day saved in administration, and—credited in part to the improved operations—a top FDIC rating of “1.” The IT team also praised ExaGrid’s support and ease of use.
