TenCate Avoids Data Domain Forklift Upgrade by Opting for an ExaGrid System

TenCate, a 300+-year-old multinational that makes specialty textiles and materials with more than 3,500 employees, was rapidly outgrowing its two Data Domain 510 appliances as virtualization and data growth exploded. Backups were taking 14–24 hours, retention had fallen to as little as three to five days, and engineers were forced to manually delete data—facing an expensive “forklift” upgrade they could not justify.

TenCate instead deployed two ExaGrid systems with Backup Exec OST and automated cross-replication, avoiding the costly rip-and-replace. The switch cut the backup window to about eight hours, increased retention from ~5 days to four weeks (with further expansion underway), delivered dedupe ratios of roughly 13:1–78:1, enabled instant restores without rehydration, simplified management, and provided automated off-site protection for disaster recovery.
