Sommer halves backup time and boosts retention with ExaGrid

Sommer, a leading manufacturer of aluminum and steel windows and facades, faced challenges meeting stringent industry regulatory compliance using tape backup. Their tape system made data restoration a slow process and struggled to provide the mandated three-month data retention period. Seeking faster backups and restores with on-site capacity, Sommer turned to ExaGrid for its disk-based backup storage system.

ExaGrid implemented its tiered backup storage solution, which integrates with Sommer's existing Dell NetWorker application. The system delivered fast backup performance through its disk-cache Landing Zone and used adaptive data deduplication to achieve high data reduction rates of over 16:1, enabling the required three-month retention. As a result, Sommer cut its backup window by 50%, restores now take seconds, and cloning to tape for archival is significantly faster, all while ensuring regulatory compliance.
