School District Improves Restores, Reduces Backup Times with ExaGrid

Granville County Schools, a PK–12 district in North Carolina with 20 schools and about 9,000 students, was moving to a 1:1 computing model and faced rapidly growing backup and restore demands. Backups to disk and tape were slow and restores were difficult, with per-device backup windows running about four hours and tape retrieval adding complexity and delay.

The district deployed an ExaGrid appliance integrated with CommVault Simpana, which uses a landing zone and post-process, zone-level deduplication to speed backups and reduce storage needs. As a result, restores are simplified and nearly instantaneous, tape has been eliminated, backup windows dropped to 1–2 hours per device, and the system proved easy to install, scale and manage—freeing IT staff for other priorities.
