A ExaGrid Case Study
NPS Pharmaceuticals, a Bedminster-based developer of specialty therapeutics, was struggling with slow, unreliable tape backups that made restores, disaster recovery and Sarbanes‑Oxley compliance difficult and expensive. Nightly backups and weekly full backups were taking far too long, tape purchase and off‑site storage costs were high, and a proposed NAS-only approach lacked sufficient retention without compression.
NPS implemented a two‑site ExaGrid disk‑based backup system that integrates with their existing CA ARCserve software, using byte‑level post‑process deduplication. The company achieved a 12:1 deduplication ratio, cut weekly full backups from 38 to 13 hours and halved daily incrementals, retained three months of on‑disk backups for easier SOX audits, enabled near‑instant restores, improved disaster recovery via offsite replication, and saved about $1,500 per month plus substantial IT staff time.
