Lee County Tax Collector Speeds Backups, Improves Disaster Recovery Plan and Eliminates Tape with ExaGrid

Lee County Tax Collector’s Office, which handles tax revenue collection and distribution for Lee County, Florida (serving the Cape Coral/Fort Myers area), was struggling with long nightly backups, an aging tape infrastructure and a need for a stronger disaster-recovery strategy. With nightly processes stretching to 13 hours including tape copy time and manual tape handling, IT sought a disk-based alternative that could shorten backup windows, eliminate tape, and replicate data to an offsite DR system.

The office deployed a two-site ExaGrid disk-based backup system (main site and DR site connected by 100Mb fiber) that works with Symantec Backup Exec and Vizioncore vRanger. ExaGrid’s post-process deduplication cut backup and replication time to about five hours, delivered dedupe ratios up to 14:1, removed daily tape operations and costs, and provided easy setup, scalability and strong vendor support—significantly improving backup performance and disaster recovery readiness.
