The City and County of Honolulu — a municipality of about 960,000 people whose IT supports nearly 8,000 users — was struggling with lengthy weekly tape backups that routinely ran into Monday mornings and degraded server and network performance. With backups affecting user experience and a tight budget, the IT team sought a faster, more efficient alternative to tape.

Honolulu deployed a single-site ExaGrid disk-based backup system that integrates with its CommVault Simpana software and uses hardware-based, post-process deduplication. The solution delivered an overall dedupe ratio of 6.5:1 (with some data up to 100:1), completed backups well within windows, eliminated weekend management, and provided easy expansion, painless upgrades and strong vendor support.
