FLIR Selects ExaGrid Target-Side Appliances for Global Backup Storage Reliability

FLIR, a global developer of thermal and visible-light sensing solutions, faced an inconsistent, inefficient backup environment after acquisitions left the company with tapes, disk arrays, and mixed storage targets and no clear enterprise backup strategy. Carl Chipman, FLIR’s Manager of Servers and Storage, was tasked with implementing a consistent, global backup standard and improving reliability and recoverability.

FLIR standardized on ExaGrid target-side appliances and its scale-out architecture, which were simple to deploy and integrate with Veritas Backup Exec. The solution boosted the proportion of data being backed up from about 30% to 90% while keeping the same backup window, delivered a consistent 20:1 deduplication ratio, eliminated tapes (reducing offsite costs), and saved roughly $100K through flexible landing-zone tuning—supporting 20+ sites, 800+ TB globally, and a robust DR topology between the UK and Sweden.
