FlightSafety Services Corporation Makes Backups Soar with ExaGrid

FlightSafety Services Corporation, a government contractor and part of FlightSafety International that delivers simulation-based training to civilian and military customers, was struggling with a slow, fragile disk-to-disk-to-tape backup process. Nightly incremental backups routinely took up to 12 hours, only one day of data could be retained on disk, restores from offsite tape could take more than four hours, and lengthy backups caused network slowdowns and compliance concerns.

By deploying an ExaGrid disk-based backup appliance that integrates with Symantec Backup Exec and uses post-process data de-duplication, FlightSafety cut backup windows in half (from ~12 to ~6 hours), reduced weekly full backups to under 12 hours, and increased on-disk retention to six months. Restore times fell from hours to under five minutes, compliance and user confidence improved, and the system can scale easily with ExaGrid’s GRID architecture.
