CGH Medical Center, an acute care hospital in Northern Illinois, was struggling with a 60-slot tape library that required frequent tape swaps, offsite vaulting and long backup windows—some jobs ran as long as 24 hours—making daily tape management and restores time-consuming and operationally difficult.

The hospital deployed a two‑site ExaGrid system (including an offsite EX21000E with self‑encrypting drives) integrated with HP Data Protector for disk‑based backups, replication and zone‑level deduplication. The solution encrypted data at rest to support HIPAA requirements, eliminated offsite tape storage, dramatically sped up backups and restores (restores now take minutes), simplified management, and provides scalable GRID architecture and flexible support for future backup software changes.
