ExaGrid System Reduces School District’s Backup Window by 63%

Phelps-Clifton Springs (Midlakes) Central School District, which serves nearly 2,000 students in Ontario County, NY, faced a full tape library and long, cumbersome restores that tied up staff time and resources. With full backups taking 48 hours and tapes needing to be recalled from offsite storage, the district needed a disk-based solution that would work with its existing infrastructure and speed up both backups and restores.

The district installed an ExaGrid system behind its existing Symantec Backup Exec application, using post-process zone-level deduplication and a GRID architecture for easy scaling. Full backup times fell from 48 to 18 hours (a 63% reduction), SQL deduplication ratios reached as high as 14:1, restores now complete with just a few keystrokes, and administrative overhead has been greatly reduced.
