A ExaGrid Case Study
Maui Electric Company (MECO), a subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric serving customers across the islands, struggled to keep up with growing data and backups. Their SAN-based disk strategy only allowed about two weeks of on-site retention, full weekend backups stretched beyond 16 hours (over the 12-hour target), slowed the network and forced continued reliance on tape.
MECO deployed an ExaGrid disk-based backup system working with their existing Symantec Backup Exec; ExaGrid’s post-process deduplication and support doubled on-site retention to over four weeks, enabled full backups well within the 12-hour window so full backups can run nightly, and cut restore times by roughly half. The solution also made site-to-site replication more efficient while still supporting weekly tape copies for offsite disaster recovery.
