ExaGrid Helps Backups Flow Smoothly at Rancho California Water District

Rancho California Water District (RCWD), which serves over 120,000 customers in the Temecula/Rancho California area, was struggling to protect growing volumes of Exchange, file server, database and financial data with a disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) strategy. Rapid data growth pushed backups to the edge of available disk capacity and the district needed a cost-effective, disaster-recovery–ready alternative that wouldn’t burden their backup servers.

RCWD deployed a two-site ExaGrid system integrated with CommVault, using post-process byte-level deduplication to minimize storage and WAN bandwidth. The solution reclaimed SAN space at lower cost than adding drives, stores 60 backup copies with room to grow, and scales by simply adding units. Restores that once took ~30 minutes from tape are now point-and-click, and RCWD cites faster backups, easier expansion and strong vendor support as key benefits.
