Evidence Convinces Kern County Sheriff’s Office to Implement ExaGrid’s Disk-Based Backup with Data Deduplication

Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the county’s oldest law enforcement agency with about 2,400 employees and an IT department supporting roughly 1,200 users and 400 mobile units, needed to modernize its disaster recovery. Facing a 1.9 TB primary dataset that included home directories, a document imaging system, the coroner’s data and mobile servers, the office wanted a more reliable alternative to tape that would fit into its existing Symantec Backup Exec workflow.

They implemented ExaGrid’s disk-based backup with post-process data deduplication that worked seamlessly with Backup Exec. Backups now complete within the window, deduplication averages about 16:1 (peaking at 30:1), restores are much faster (a full document imaging server restore took 35 minutes), IT spends less time managing backups, and the office can retain data longer — all after a quick installation and responsive vendor support.
