Eisai Makes Shift to ExaGrid, Realizes Huge Performance Gains

Eisai, a global pharmaceutical company, faced growing backup and retention challenges driven by strict FDA requirements (some backups retained 30 years), up to 25% annual data growth, and a 90‑day day‑to‑day retention policy with roughly 115 TB of weekly backups. Aging backup hardware, dual sites and tape dependence produced frequent errors, long backup windows and heavy administrative overhead.

Eisai selected ExaGrid after a proof‑of‑concept for its deduplication, landing‑zone architecture and Veritas NetBackup compatibility, deploying four appliances at production and two at DR. The result: logical backups of 1,061 TB reduced to about 115 TB on disk (average dedupe 11:1, peak 232:1), dramatically faster backups and restores (a ~30 TB job that once took weeks or months on tape now completes in days), and more than 50% time saved managing backups.
