Eby-Brown, founded in 1887 and the second-largest tobacco/candy/convenience distributor in the U.S. with $4.1B in sales, serves 12,000 retail locations from seven distribution centers. The company struggled with long tape-based backups—weekly full backups often ran into Monday morning—causing system slowdowns and concerns about data protection and manageability.

Eby-Brown deployed a two-site ExaGrid disk-based backup system (primary plus a DR site) that works with its existing CA ARCserve software, using post-process compression and byte-level de-duplication to send only changes between sites. The result: weekly full backups that once took days now complete in hours, tape use is nearly eliminated, WAN bandwidth needs are minimal, scalability is simple, and overall cost and restore times have significantly improved.
