Eastern Propane and Oil Reduces Backup Window by Over 80% with ExaGrid and Veeam

Eastern Propane and Oil, an 85-year-old family-owned energy provider serving New England, was modernizing its IT while switching ERP systems and needed to replace slow LTO tape backups (Veritas Backup Exec). Their tape-based nightly backups could take up to 12 hours and constrained retention, so they sought a faster, more scalable backup solution for a newly virtualized environment.

They implemented ExaGrid with Veeam, which integrated smoothly and writes to a disk “landing zone” with adaptive deduplication and parallel replication. The change cut nightly backup windows by over 80 (from as much as 12 hours to about 2 hours), delivered combined deduplication ratios of roughly 3:1–5:1 (with potential combined rates up to 10:1), enabled much faster restores and instant VM recoveries, increased retention, and simplified scaling and support.
