A ExaGrid Case Study
The City of Durango Information Systems Division (ISD) was struggling to back up millions of small files from its SIRE document-management system to tape. Tape’s physical “shoeshine” effect and sequential access stretched full backups to about four days, forcing a week-long backup window and making restores slow and laborious.
ISD moved to an ExaGrid disk-based deduplication appliance integrated with Symantec Backup Exec, with easy installation and proactive support. The solution cut full backup time from ~4 days to ~30 hours, shrank the backup window from a week to a weekend, allowed up to four concurrent backup jobs, reduced restore times from hours to minutes, and produced overall deduplication ratios averaging about 5:1 (range 3:1–10:1).
