Charles County Sheriff Enforces Improved Data Backup and Recovery Plan with ExaGrid

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office, which supports dispatch, court security, records management, mobile video and other critical law-enforcement systems, was struggling with an unreliable 21-tape Dell library. Backups frequently failed or didn’t complete overnight, restores were slow and error-prone, and large jobs—like the document imaging weekly backup—took well over 19 hours, creating major operational risk and frustration for IT staff.

The department replaced tape with ExaGrid’s disk-based, byte-level deduplication system (integrated with Symantec Backup Exec), which stores only changed data and markedly reduces backup volumes. Nightly backups fell from nearly eight hours to under two, the document imaging backup dropped to six hours, and restores (for example a 3.5 GB CAD directory) became fast and reliable—effectively eliminating tape failures and improving overall backup reliability and scalability.
