Central Minnesota Credit Union Banks on ExaGrid for Faster Backups and Restores

Central Minnesota Credit Union (CMCU) is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative with 10 branches, more than 35,000 members and over $500 million in assets. The IT team was burdened by slow, 13-hour tape backups, constant tape-drive maintenance and manual offsite tape handling, and needed a centrally managed solution with off-site replication and faster restores.

CMCU installed a two-site ExaGrid system that integrates with Symantec Backup Exec, providing single-interface management and nightly replication between sites. Backups fell from 13 hours to 90 minutes, restores became near-instant, maintenance time and tape costs were largely eliminated, and ExaGrid’s deduplication reduced 20TB of data to about 615GB (roughly 45:1), freeing staff to focus on higher‑value work.
