Winchester Cathedral - Customer Case Study

Winchester Cathedral, one of England’s largest medieval cathedrals hosting more than 130,000 paying visitors a year plus 80 employees and 700 volunteers, was relying on an aging analog surveillance system that frequently failed to record. To better protect its historic assets, manage large crowds and improve overall security, Winchester Cathedral engaged integrator ICOMM and selected Exacq Technologies’ exacqVision Professional VMS software as the foundation for an IP-based upgrade.

ICOMM deployed 36 IP cameras (Axis, Arecont Vision, ACTi and Sanyo) and two HP servers running Exacq Technologies’ exacqVision VMS, providing live viewing, map and alarm integration, mobile access and fast video search. The new exacqVision system delivered markedly improved image quality, made incident investigation and crowd-control planning far easier (including for high-attendance Christmas events), and has helped deter vandalism and theft while enabling staff to monitor all public areas across the cathedral.
