Smart tunnel monitoring and predictive maintenance solution for Olympia Odos

Olympia Odos, operator of the strategic 201.5 km Greek motorway, needed a more efficient way to monitor tunnel equipment and move from heavy, reactive maintenance to predictive maintenance. The company had envisioned a wireless IoT solution with cloud-based big data and machine learning; Ex Machina was engaged to turn that vision into a pilot “Smart Tunnel” system using its IoT platform and a custom gateway.

Ex Machina designed and deployed the Smart Tunnel solution—including a bespoke IoT gateway, a unique network topology and a sensor suite covering jet-fan vibration, pumps and generators, batteries/UPS and transformer conditions—and coordinated sensor installation and connectivity. Data are fed into Ex Machina’s IoT platform for real-time analysis and ML, already producing actionable insights, delivered on schedule and slated for roll‑out to all tunnels; the system enables predictive maintenance, better planning, longer equipment life, improved safety and service levels, and expected maintenance cost savings.
