A Ex Machina Case Study
Athens International Airport (AIA), Greece’s largest airport and a carbon-neutral operator (level 3+ in 2016), partnered with Ex Machina in 2016 to develop an innovative environmental monitoring program. AIA needed the ability to monitor air pollution at arbitrary locations across the site and to better understand aircraft noise patterns affecting neighboring communities.
Ex Machina delivered a turn-key IoT solution consisting of highly portable, stand‑alone air quality sensor nodes (measuring O3, PM1/2.5/10, temperature, humidity and pressure) and autonomous, PV‑powered sound metering nodes, all with dual GPRS/LoRaWAN communications and cloud analytics, visualization and reporting. The Ex Machina deployment provides continuous real‑time data and combined analysis that can localize aircraft noise events, supports regulatory compliance, gives AIA full access to raw data (avoiding vendor lock‑in through open technologies) and has measurably enhanced the airport’s environmental monitoring capabilities and community engagement.
