Case Study: Open ELIoT achieves real-time, low-cost surface water monitoring and early flood/pollution alerts with Ex Machina

A Ex Machina Case Study

Environmental IoT real time monitoring of surface water bodies rivers, lakes

Open ELIoT needed an integrated, affordable Internet of Things solution to monitor surface water bodies in real time and provide timely warnings for floods, droughts and pollution, addressing the high cost, slow turnaround and sparse coverage of conventional monitoring. Ex Machina supplied the Environmental IoT (ELIoT) approach—an open-architecture service combining low-cost, energy‑autonomous sensors and an online IoT platform for data collection, processing and visualization.

Ex Machina deployed sensor units (Lithaios, Pikrodafni, Spercheios) and a public dashboard that delivers continuous measurements—water level, temperature, conductivity, dissolved O2 and pH—giving live data for three rivers in Greece. The solution improved temporal data density and situational awareness, reduced reliance on costly in‑situ sampling and enabled timely decision support; Ex Machina’s platform now provides real-time, publicly accessible monitoring and analytics for multiple water bodies.
