Evolv screening technology at Oakland International Airport

Oakland International Airport (OAK), a busy California airport handling over 13 million annual travelers, needed a faster, less invasive way to screen a growing employee population. Faced with time-consuming walk‑through metal detectors and occasional full‑body pat downs that created long queues and morale issues, OAK turned to Evolv and installed the Evolv Edge to modernize its employee screening program.

Evolv deployed the Evolv Edge in Terminal 2 and demonstrated detection of metallic and non‑metallic threats (guns, bombs, explosives) while screening more than 600 people per hour at walking speed without requiring shoes off or pocket emptying. The mobile system’s adjustable sensitivity reduced false alarms on innocuous items, increased employee acceptance, enabled pop‑up checkpoints across the airport, and delivered measurable throughput and operational efficiency improvements—benefits driven by Evolv’s hardware and software integration.
