How Eastern Illinois University Uses Online Courses and Data to Reduce At-Risk Drinking

Eastern Illinois University (EIU) was struggling with longstanding alcohol abuse and at-risk drinking among students, which affected both campus safety and relations with the surrounding Charleston community. To strengthen its prevention efforts, EIU partnered with EVERFI and adopted AlcoholEdu for College, an online alcohol education program supported by analytics and evaluation tools.

EVERFI helped EIU implement mandatory first-year and transfer student completion of AlcoholEdu, while also providing data that informed programming, policy changes, and community collaboration. As a result, EIU reduced heavy drinking by 34%, achieved near-universal course completion, and used the program’s insights to support campus planning, compliance efforts, and a broader community prevention strategy.
