Providence Health & Services’ San Fernando Valley hospitals—part of a 27-hospital system serving 45,000 employees—needed a fast, reliable way to reach staff during unexpected local disruptions and to meet regulatory notification requirements without burdening IT. In November 2008 wildfires closed nearby freeways and prevented about 40% of staff from reaching the hospital while it was at full capacity, exposing gaps in traditional recall methods and daily nurse-callback processes.

Providence implemented Everbridge Aware, a cloud-based emergency notification system that required minimal internal support and allowed targeted, rapid messaging by department. The team contacted hundreds of clinicians in the time it used to take to make a single call, fully staffing the shift within an hour; the system has since been used for drills, regulatory surveys, and routine nurse recalls, improving response rates, productivity, and compliance tracking.
