PenFed Credit Union, the nation’s second-largest federal credit union with more than 1.6 million members and branches including locations in Puerto Rico, faced an urgent business continuity and employee-safety challenge when Hurricane Maria struck. With three branches in the San Juan area, PenFed needed to quickly and accurately account for the safety and status of 49 local employees amid widespread devastation and flooding.

PenFed’s business continuity team used Everbridge to poll those 49 employees over ten days, confirming personal safety, housing damage and family status; the team ultimately accounted for everyone and was able to provide appropriate supplies and support. The rapid, automated outreach also strengthened PenFed’s ability to communicate during other critical incidents and IT outages, improving response and resilience going forward.
