HealthEquity Demonstrates Operational Resilience Before, During, and After Severe Weather Storms

HealthEquity, a non‑bank Health Savings Account custodian serving millions of members, faced major operational risk during back‑to‑back winter storms Viola and Uri in February 2021. The storms struck areas with large HealthEquity teams—particularly Irving, TX and Louisville, KY—causing prolonged power and internet outages, burst pipes, dangerous travel conditions and other infrastructure damage that threatened employee safety and service continuity for roughly 900 impacted team members.

Using Everbridge, HealthEquity’s Crisis Management Team began sending template notifications on February 10 and, between Feb 10–19, issued 6,795 alerts to affected staff. Daily CMT briefings guided office closures and follow‑up messages; Everbridge polling identified employees in greatest need so the company could provide alternate lodging, bottled water and reallocate staff to cover outages. The rapid, targeted communications kept team members informed, supported those most at risk and helped maintain member service levels throughout the crisis.
