Washington State University models the IEEE 123-node feeder with ETAP and validates 123-node ADMS studies

Washington State University (WSU) collaborated with vendor ETAP to accurately model the IEEE 123-node benchmark test feeder system, a complex radial distribution network. The challenge was to build and validate this model for advanced distribution management system (ADMS) studies, which was complicated by load modeling constraints and the need to match IEEE benchmark results for functions like volt-VAR optimization and fault management.

ETAP provided a comprehensive solution using its Power Simulator and Grid software. The validated model enabled WSU to conduct studies on switching optimization, service restoration, and the integration of distributed energy resources with smart inverters. As a result of this work, the IEEE 123-node system is now included as a built-in example project in ETAP, providing a valuable resource for immediate use by other researchers.
