UBC modernizes campus power systems in 2021 with ETAP digital twin

The University of British Columbia (UBC) faced a challenge in replacing all the high-voltage electrical distribution equipment powering its main campus. Key issues included aging medium-voltage switchgear, the need for remote breaker operation, and a requirement for better data analysis to ensure reliability, safety, and efficiency. To address this, UBC utilized ETAP design software for system modeling and to plan for the upgrades.

ETAP provided a solution centered on its digital twin concept, which enabled real-time substation monitoring and a seamless transition from design to operation. UBC integrated ETAP Power Simulator with Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure Power Operation for a complete system. The results included a future-proof solution with a single-pane view for operational efficiency, simplification through single-vendor hardware and software, and an interoperable, cybersecurity-integrated system.
