TVA monitors 15,000 points with ETAP Real-Time for nuclear power safety

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) faced the challenge of monitoring the critical auxiliary power systems at its nuclear plants, which were built with analog equipment before the digital age. TVA needed a way to connect these old systems to the digital world to improve safety and reliability without the prohibitive cost of replacing all the existing equipment. They chose to implement the ETAP Real-Time solution from vendor ETAP.

ETAP provided a digital twin model of the power system and the real-time monitoring hardware. By using data concentrators to gather information from a limited number of points, the ETAP Real-Time system's state estimation capability made approximately 15,000 data points available for monitoring, playback, and analysis. This solution provided TVA with enhanced online monitoring, event investigation, and predictive simulation capabilities, significantly benefiting nuclear safety and operability while avoiding costly equipment replacements and outages.
