Technical University of Cotopaxi identifies optimal DG injection with ETAP after 148.20% overload analysis

The Technical University of Cotopaxi (UTC) needed to provide its engineering students with a realistic environment to study the impact of integrating distributed generation sources into a live power network. Their challenges included designing physical models, implementing real-time SCADA communications, and performing predictive analysis for grid disturbances and faults. To address this, the university turned to vendor ETAP and its real-time monitoring and simulation solutions.

ETAP implemented a solution using ETAP Real-Time, SCADA, and STAR protection software to create a digital twin of the university's laboratory microgrid. This allowed students to perform predictive analysis and run realistic simulations, such as a contingency that overloaded a generator to 148.20% and a single-phase fault that correctly tripped a breaker at 35.48% current rise. The ETAP solution enabled the identification of optimal distributed generation injection points with minimal voltage and angle deviations, verified protection coordination, and established a foundation for future advanced research.
