Stellenbosch Municipality improves visibility across 200,000 customers with ETAP

Stellenbosch Municipality, serving over 200,000 customers in South Africa, sought to improve visibility and operational resiliency across its electrical network of 9 substations and 40 secondary substations. Their challenge was to reduce outage duration and eliminate operational blind spots with a modern, vendor-agnostic solution, moving beyond a traditional limited SCADA system. They partnered with vendor ETAP and system integrator Altek Solutions to begin this digital transformation.

The solution implemented by ETAP was a phased approach starting with the creation of an electrical digital twin using ETAP Power Simulator for analysis. This was followed by the deployment of the ETAP eSCADA system for real-time visualization and control, which integrated both new and legacy equipment. The results included greater operational visibility, faster fault identification, reduced outage duration, and improved operator efficiency. The project has prepared the municipality for future advanced distribution management systems (ADMS).
