PTI reduces PMU placement effort with ETAP's Python optimization model

PTI, a South American engineering company, faced the challenge of determining the minimum number and optimal placement of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for full observability in electrical networks. They needed a robust mathematical formulation and a selection algorithm to model the system and simulate various scenarios. To address this, they turned to vendor ETAP and its power system analysis software.

ETAP provided a solution using ETAP-Py for Python integration, allowing PTI to build a digital twin of the network and implement an optimization routine. This resulted in a fast, accurate, and zero-cost methodology that significantly reduced computational effort and improved placement accuracy. The solution from ETAP enhanced system monitoring capabilities without requiring additional physical instrumentation.
