OPAL-RT Technologies validates 100,000+ node power systems with ETAP

OPAL-RT Technologies, a developer of real-time digital simulators and HIL testing equipment, faced challenges in modeling and validating large-scale electrical networks. They needed a way to export a complex power system model from ETAP software into an Excel file compatible with their OPAL-RT ePHASORSIM real-time simulation tool to enable extensive Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.

The solution implemented by ETAP was the addition of an export function within the DataX menu of its software. This allowed OPAL-RT to easily import the complete ETAP model, including all electrical devices and parameters, directly into their ePHASORSIM solver for real-time simulation. This ETAP solution enabled automated testing of thousands of scenarios, validated controller logic through HIL simulation, and significantly reduced time-to-market for their customers.
