A ETAP Case Study
Nexamp Energy Inc, a clean energy company deploying large-scale solar and energy storage projects, faced significant challenges in conducting DC arc flash analysis for its Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The highly-variant nature of battery short-circuit current, differences in battery chemistries, and complex conductor arrangements made it difficult to achieve accurate and compliant incident energy estimates without overly conservative or under-conservative results. To address this, Nexamp utilized ETAP's specialized software, including its DC Arc Flash and DC Short Circuit analysis modules.
ETAP delivered a comprehensive digital modeling solution that allowed Nexamp to simulate various battery configurations and conductor arrangements within a single workspace. Using ETAP's Transient DC Arc Flash solution, which complies with standards like IEC 61660, the company could accurately model the unique behavior of different battery types, such as lithium-ion. This provided Nexamp with improved accuracy for compliance-based estimates, enabling proactive risk management, design optimization, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of its BESS installations.
