Case Study: DG Cement clears short-circuit constraints with ETAP and ABB Is-limiters

A ETAP Case Study

Preview of the DG Cement Case Study

DG Cement keeps fault currents below 31.5 kA with ETAP

The customer, DG Cement, a major cement producer in Pakistan, faced rising short-circuit levels that exceeded their switchgear ratings due to a plant expansion. Their challenge was to limit fault currents without the drawbacks of traditional methods like reactors. The vendor, ETAP, was used by ABB to perform a complete short-circuit analysis of the plant's electrical network using ETAP software.

The solution implemented by ABB using ETAP involved modeling the entire distribution system and using its analysis functions to design the application engineering for three Is-limiters. This process ensured fault currents were kept below equipment ratings for all 26 operating scenarios. The results achieved by ETAP included safe fault levels, high-speed protection, and comprehensive coverage, drastically reducing manual engineering work and ensuring the plant's equipment was protected.
