CDM Smith validates 711 MW unit capability with ETAP using 80 load flow cases

CDM Smith, a global engineering and construction firm, faced the challenge of validating the true reactive power capability of a 711 MW generator unit to ensure safe and compliant grid operation. They needed to understand the unit's limitations from manufacturer data, climate, and grid requirements, moving beyond the staged testing method required by NERC MOD-025 standards to find a more efficient and accurate analytical approach using ETAP software.

The solution from ETAP involved using its Load Flow software and Result Analyzer to create a validated digital twin model of the power plant. This model allowed CDM Smith to efficiently run and analyze 80 different load flow cases, testing a wide range of operating conditions and grid voltages. As a result, ETAP provided a theoretical approach that utilized historical data to minimize staged testing, accurately identified the unit's true reactive capability, and offered insights to support potential modifications that could enhance grid reliability.
