A ETAP Case Study
B. Braun Medical, a major medical product manufacturer, faced significant challenges due to unplanned power outages at its Irvine, California facility. The absence of an optimized load-shedding system meant that grid disturbances would cause a complete plant shutdown, leading to costly production losses and safety issues. To address this, B. Braun partnered with vendor ETAP to explore improvements using the ETAP Real-time Intelligent Load Shedding (iLS) solution.
ETAP implemented a solution that began with creating a digital twin of the electrical network for analysis. They then deployed the ETAP iLS system, which proactively calculates and executes optimal load shedding in real-time during disturbances. This resulted in critical operations being maintained during outages, achieving estimated cost savings of approximately $1 million per outage event. The ETAP solution also minimized production loss and eliminated the need for lengthy regulatory re-validations after unexpected shutdowns.
