Optimal Control for Data Center Cooling Systems

Equinix, a leading operator of advanced data centers, faced the challenge of optimizing its large-scale cooling system at its FR6 facility in Frankfurt, Germany. The primary hurdles included ensuring precise data from sensors affected by external influences, maintaining stringent safety standards, and gaining stakeholder trust for an innovative approach. They collaborated with vendor Etalytics to implement a comprehensive analysis and an AI-driven solution using the etaMIND AI Suite.

The solution implemented by Etalytics involved creating a digital twin of the cooling system and using AI to coordinate and refine the equipment's setpoints. This resulted in significant energy savings of 900 MWh per year and a reduction of carbon emissions by 240 tCO2e per year. The success at the Frankfurt site is serving as a blueprint for potential optimization across Equinix's global network of data centers.
