Topeka Public Works Increases Transparency with Data Analysis Tool

The City of Topeka Public Works Department’s Technical Support Group faced a need to make complex budget and spending data clear to residents and to improve internal collaboration across divisions that previously relied on isolated spreadsheets and static reports. To address this, the City of Topeka selected ESRI’s ArcGIS Insights to present financial and location-based information in a web-based, visual format that supports data-driven decision making.

ESRI implemented ArcGIS Insights to centralize, visualize, and share budget data—housing budgets for three PWD divisions, enabling managers to track actual spending, spot trends, and identify funding needs. The tool increased organizational transparency by giving the public easier access to city data, improved accuracy, and reduced data-preparation time (previously 1–1.5 hours to pull and post files) to a simple email link, freeing staff to focus on services and prompting more informed citizen engagement.
